The Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants Essays -
The Symbolism in Hills Like White Elephants Ernest Hemingway is a mind blowing essayist, known for what he keeps separate from stories not for what he tells. His fundamental accentuation in Hills Like White Elephants is by all accounts imagery. Imagery is the craftsmanship or practice of utilizing images, particularly by contributing things with an emblematic significance or by communicating the imperceptible or immaterial by methods for noticeable or sexy portrayals (WWWebster Dictionary). He utilizes this method to stress the significance of thoughts, by and by recommending that he forgets about the significant subtleties of the story by representing their importance. This short story is loaded up with imagery, some of which the peruser may never discover. The title itself can be investigated significantly more profound. The slopes alludes to the state of the female body during pregnancy and the white elephants represent a property requiring a lot of care and cost and returning little benefit (WWWebster Dictionary). The story is about a man and a lady taking a train to get a premature birth. The train should show change and development, something this couple seems to require in light of the fact that their life is extremely standard. The peruser is informed that there is a blind made of strings of bamboo dots, hung over the open entryway into the bar, to keep out flies. The bamboo dots not just keep them from their issues (known as flies) yet it likewise keeps their lives separate from the entirety of the others at the bar. Hemingway at that point tells the peruser that the train will stop at this intersection for two minutes and afterward go to Madrid. The train just halting for two minutes is to show the significance of the young lady's choice to have the premature birth. It is a major choice and there isn't that much an ideal opportunity for her to lounge around and consider it. The person and the young lady are currently sitting at a bar choosing what they should drink. The young lady removes her cap and puts it on the table. This activity represents her putting her sentiments on the table to discuss them with the man. Rather than coming straight out and discussing the issues the couple chooses to drink brew. The demonstration of expending liquor is another route for them to flee from their issues. Later on, the man and the lady are talking and the lady says, They look like white elephants. He answers to her remark by saying, I've never observed one. Knowing what we think about white elephants (their significance of important things that are difficult to keep up) this shows the man has never needed to manage a circumstance like this. Her counter is No, you wouldn't have. This uncovers she believes he's a defeatist who has never confronted an issue this way. The couple keeps on drinking all through the story. At a certain point the young lady shows that she has some confidence in what the man thinks by asking him what way they should drink their beverages, with or without water. The couple at that point orders two Anis del Toro. This is another beverage to the lady, so like any inquisitive consumer she considers what it will suggest a flavor like. She trusts that the beverage will taste not the same as others she has attempted yet finds that it suggests a flavor like licorice. The young lady at that point says, Everything has an aftertaste like licorice. Particularly all the things you've stood by so long for, similar to absinthe. When she says this it alludes to how she felt that this relationship would be not quite the same as others, yet once she got into it she understood that he is much the same as the various folks she has dated before. Later in the story she adds to this sentiment of redundancy by saying, That is everything we do, isn't it-take a gander at things and attempt new beverages. She truly is by all accounts exhausted with very similar things this relationship keeps on creating. Liquor keeps on being a factor in this story. Maybe it had to do with the way that Hemingway appeared to manage a great deal of his issues by drinking. The couple arranges more beverages and keeps on attempting and talk about the issue of the premature birth. It is actually a horrendously

When College Has a Negative ROI - Guest Post by David I. Block, EA
At the point when College Has a Negative ROI - Guest Post by David I. Square, EA My bookkeeper from NYC, David Block, sent this out to his rundown and I thought it raised some significant issues to consider for anybody considering going to (or sending a youngster to) a costly yet low-positioned school. For a few, at any rate on unadulterated monetary/budgetary grounds, it may bode well to go directly from secondary school into the working scene. Heres what David needs to report: With graduation season essentially behind us, there are a huge number of secondary school graduates who are making the most of their last brilliant summer, before well, before that time that many consider to be another brilliant four years. [I affectionately recall those halcyon days before this present reality hits! Indeed, even in school, I thought: Wow, am I everà BUSY! These get-togethers to juggle!!!à But oh dear, genuine isnt so bubble-wrapped.] Be that as it may, throughout the last couple decades, there has been a rising chorale of pundits who point to soaring educational costs, and the relating soaring obligation stacks, and are simply wondering:â is it ACTUALLY justified, despite all the trouble? All things considered, for certain schools, the appropriate response is a reverberating: NO. TaxMaster Financials Real World Personal Strategy Note At the point when College Has a Negative ROI Whats right isnt consistently mainstream. Whats well known isnt in every case right. Howard Cosell The same number of have asserted, (for example, the US Census Bureauâ https://www.census.gov/goad/2002pubs/p23-210.pdfâ ), a common higher education is worth up to a million bucks over a profession however that is not valid for each degree. Whats turning out to be increasingly more evident is thatâ prospectiveâ college understudies need to get their work done in advance, since certain degrees essentially arent worth the venture. Of the 1312 universities assessed in the 2014 PayScale College ROI Report (discovered here:â https://www.payscale.com/school return on initial capital investment/full-list/money related guide/yesâ ), moves on from 58 establishments are evaluated to be more regrettable off following 20 years contrasted and the individuals who skipped school and went directly to work. These 58 dreary establishments make up 4.42% of the considerable number of universities reviewed. The most minimal evaluation goes to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where PayScale gauges that graduates will be $121,000 more terrible off following 20 years for gaining a degree. To compute this gauge, PayScale utilizes an open door cost measure they call degree of profitability (ROI). In the wake of figuring all the net school costs, the report looks at 20 years of assessed pay of a college alum versus 24 years of salary from a secondary school graduate who began working quickly and didnt need to pay school costs (or take advances). Future understudies (and their folks) must understand that not all schools are equivalent. The alumni from the least positioning schools report acquiring less pay after graduation. The PayScale site is useful in light of the fact that it permits you to see announced income of graduates from over a thousand schools. I likewise accept that low-performing schools in this report will in general offer less budgetary help, which leaves their alumni with bigger obligation loads. Nonetheless, the most exceptionally blessed universities can diminish their expense of participation with awards and grants. For instance, Stanford is one of the most costly schools dependent on retail cost, however its monetary help is commonly liberal. So the net expense is exceptionally serious, and their positioning is number 4 dependent on the PayScale study. The rundown, shockingly, isn't comprehensive. For instance, my place of graduation doesn't appear to be in the rundown by any means. What's more, obviously, there is an inquiry regarding whether school is to be best used to make balanced, shrewd understudies, knowledgeable in aesthetic sciences, or if school is presently basically to be considered as professional school. In any case, the rundown has some worth, as there are contrasts among schools and majors.Debt troubles are relative. A specialists compensation can all the more rapidly address off a significant expense training advance than can an educators. A decent general guideline is to abstain from acquiring school obligations that will be the greater part of your normal yearly pay. Restricting credits to close to half of a future compensation permits graduates to take care of their obligations following five years, utilizing 10% of their future salary. Some understudies start to understand their broken financial matters simply after they have selected. Of course, those schools with the least ROI likewise have the most noteworthy dropout rates in the nation. For instance, we have Adams State, which has a 21% graduation rate and a 20-year net ROI of short $20,143. What ought to be obvious from this information is the universe of contrast between the results of alumni of exceptionally evaluated schools, and of those close to the base of the barrel.à Attending a school with a poor ROI isn't really a slip-up, yet the budgetary guide bundle would do well to be sweet.à So, treat your school choice like any investment:â you additionally need to get your work done before you submit your time and cash to an obscure result. I trust I am helping the school decision conversation for you, instead of preventing! Heartily, David à I. Square, EA For Arnold, Tina and Dianne TaxMaster Financial Service Corporation (212) 247-9090 What's your opinion of Davidsâ analysis of College ROI? Reading Lists! - UGA Undergraduate Admissions
Reading Lists! - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Reading Lists! It is summertime, which means that the summer reading lists are out in full force. In my house (with a rising sixth and a rising eighth grader), there is now a great deal of moaning going on whenever I bring up the dreaded reading word. Yes, I understand that school is just now out for a lot of students, and the last thing you want to do is sit down and read a book. And my answer to both my two kids and to everyone else? Too bad, now go and read!. Okay, I am not that harsh, but I do suggest (both to you and my kids) setting aside 20-30 minutes a day to read, whether it is a book off the reading list or one you just pick up at the local library. In looking at the two reading lists, I have gone through at least eight of the books in the last two years. One of them, The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, is a great book that I just finished a week ago. Why do I push reading? If you want to do better in your English classes, write better, have a stronger SAT Critical Reading, stronger SAT Writing, communicate better, etc, one great way to do this is to dig into books. Read across the spectrum, from non-fiction to thrillers to sci-fi, but no matter what, read! As for me, I just finished re-reading one of my favorite books, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by R. Heinlein, and I am in the middle of two others (The Big Short by Michael Lewis and Watership Down by Richard Adams. My wife bugs me for reading more than one book at a time, but that is just the way I am. So go grab those reading lists and start reading! Enjoy, and Go Dawgs!

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe Essay - 1693 Words
The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe In The Cask of Amontillado, Edgar Allan Poe uses several different artistic choices in the construction of the story. He manipulates the story to be the way he wants it to be by using the point of view of the narrator, the setting, and a common monotonous sentiment throughout. Poe is successful in maintaining a spirit of perverseness that is prevalent in most of his works. The point of view plays a very important role in influencing the readers perception of the story. The first line of the story is a good example of how the narrator attempts to bring the reader to his side right from the start. This puts Fortunato at a major disadvantage in the fight for the readers liking, and ultimately the fight for his life. As in most Poe stories, the narrator tries to steer the reader away from seeing the perverseness of his actions. In The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor tries to convince the reader that walling up Fortunato is his way making himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong (Oââ¬â¢Neill 669). In reality, Poe tells the story from Montresors point of view in order to increase the astonishment and perverseness that the reader feels when reading the story. Edgar Allan Poe uses the setting in many different ways in his various works. There are two primary settings in The Cask of Amontillado, the carnival and the catacombs. There are several reasons that make the carnival the ideal setting for Poe to lure Fortunato away. It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend (Oââ¬â¢Neill 666). This sentence contains two important details as to why the carnival is a perfect setting for Montresors undertakings. She said to Summer, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m okay. Everythingââ¬â¢s okay.â⬠Summerââ¬â¢s MMââ¬â¢s were lying scattered on the ground. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like people disappearing,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Aw, honey, itââ¬â¢s gonna be all right,â⬠Michael said and patted her awkwardly. ââ¬Å"We told her where we are and sort of basically whatââ¬â¢s going on,â⬠he said to Jenny. Jennyââ¬â¢s buoyancy at finding Summer was gone; the effervescence had fizzled out of her blood. Julian was going to do something nasty-but what could be worse than what heââ¬â¢d already done? Since sheââ¬â¢d known Julian, heââ¬â¢d chased her with UFOs, dark elves, and giant insects-not to mention a Shadow Wolf and Snake. Heââ¬â¢d lurked in the shadows of her room and hissed terrifying messages at her in the dark. Heââ¬â¢d caught her in a cave-in, left her alone to drown, and menaced her with a cyber-lion. Heââ¬â¢d kidnapped her and hunted her throughout two worlds. What could he do to top all that? ââ¬Å"Where do we go next?â⬠Audrey said. They looked around. Nothing in the immediate vicinity was lit up. The park was completely dark and dead silent around them. ââ¬Å"Here, hold this,â⬠Dee said to Jenny. Jenny took the flashlight and said, ââ¬Å"Oh, be careful. â⬠Dee was shinning up one of the old-fashioned green-painted lampposts. ââ¬Å"I can see the lighthouse on the island,â⬠she said at the top with one long leg hooked over the crosspiece which supported a lantern. ââ¬Å"And thereââ¬â¢re a lot of trees everywhereâ⬠¦ . The Ferris wheel looks cool, itââ¬â¢s sort of rising out of them like a mountain rising out of clouds.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is it lit up?â⬠ââ¬Å"The only thing thatââ¬â¢s lit is something toward the back-itââ¬â¢s got a big waterwheel and some boats shaped like swans.â⬠ââ¬Å"The Tunnel of Love,â⬠Jenny said. Dee came down and they started toward the Tunnel of Love, Jenny guiding them. It was another ride sheââ¬â¢d loved as a kid-not because it had anything to do with love, but because it was dark, and cool, and sheââ¬â¢d loved the swan boats. Now, the thought of going into that tunnel was-well, it was better not to think about it. They were skirting the lake when they saw the shape among the trees. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a critter!â⬠Michael said. ââ¬Å"Only a big one!â⬠The flashlight beams caught it briefly, even as it moved back into the trees. It was big, and Jenny had a glimpse of reddish skin like tanned leather. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s got a head, so it canââ¬â¢t be P.C. or Slug,â⬠Audrey said. ââ¬Å"Who or who?â⬠asked Summer. ââ¬Å"Never mind. Weââ¬â¢d better just watch out for it,â⬠Jenny said, and they did, keeping their backs to the water and watching the trees. I should have asked Julian about them, she thought. Aloud, she said, ââ¬Å"What are they, dââ¬â¢you think? And how come theyââ¬â¢re running around loose?â⬠ââ¬Å"Other people the Shadow Men have caught,â⬠said Dee. ââ¬Å"Pets,â⬠said Michael. ââ¬Å"Or maybe just part of the general ambiance,â⬠Audrey said grimly. Whatever the thing had been, Jenny felt an instinctive horror and revulsion for it, just as sheââ¬â¢d felt for the little gray one that had looked like a withered fetus. Summer didnââ¬â¢t join the conversation at all. She just hurried lightly along, one hand gripping Jennyââ¬â¢s sleeve, staring at everything they passed. She was like a large blue butterfly skimming in their midst. They were a motley group, Jenny thought-Summer in her springtime dress and Deeââ¬â¢s camouflage jacket, Audrey with her arm tied up in a sling made of Michaelââ¬â¢s undershirt. Jenny herself carrying Deeââ¬â¢s flashlight. Michael was carrying his own flashlight, while Dee carried Audreyââ¬â¢s pick. The other weapons had all gotten lost along the way. Jenny noticed that Dee kept her distance from Audrey. Things still werenââ¬â¢t right with Dee. She was too quiet, too un-exuberant. Sure they were in danger, but Dee loved danger, she got up and ate it for breakfast, breathed it, went looking for it whenever she could. Dee should be enjoying this. Jenny edged closer and said softly, ââ¬Å"You know, Audrey didnââ¬â¢t mean anything by that-when she said not to put your hand in the MMââ¬â¢s machine.â⬠Dee shrugged. ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠She went on looking straight ahead. ââ¬Å"Really she didnââ¬â¢t. Sheââ¬â¢s just like my mom, sometimes sheââ¬â¢s got to say things for your own good.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure. I know.â⬠Jenny gave up. They passed a food stand just before they got to the Tunnel of Love. Jenny had an urge to break in-even a cold hot dog would be good right now, even a bun-but she didnââ¬â¢t say anything. They had two gold coins. They were so close. They couldnââ¬â¢t stop for anything now. Blue and red and purple lights shone on the waterwheel in front of the Tunnel of Love. There was a rustic old mill behind the waterwheel, and a sign on the tunnel. In the afternoon, in the real park, the sign had read: tunnel of love. Now it read: tunnel of love and d-. The last word was obscured by clusters of ivy. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t read it,â⬠Jenny said. ââ¬Å"Death, probably. As in ââ¬ËLove and death are the only two things that really matter.ââ¬â¢ Nââ¬â¢est-ce pas?â⬠Audrey said. ââ¬Å"Oh, spiffy,â⬠said Michael. Summer got a firmer grip on Jennyââ¬â¢s sleeve. A swan boat was waiting at the loading dock, its white wings arched gracefully by its sides, its neck a supple curve. Beads of water glistened on the plastic. Jenny didnââ¬â¢t want to get into it. If that head turns around ââ¬â But they didnââ¬â¢t have any choice. This was obviously the right place, awake and waiting for them. If Jenny wanted the third gold coin, she had to get on the ride. ââ¬Å"Come on, people,â⬠she said. The boat tilted as they got in-Jenny and Dee on the front seat with Summer between them, Audrey and Michael in the back. You read "The Forbidden Game: The Kill Chapter 11" in category "Essay examples" They sat on wooden boards. As soon as they were all in, the swan began to move. ââ¬Å"Did you notice that cave looking like a face this afternoon?â⬠Michael said as they approached the tunnel. Jenny hadnââ¬â¢t. The fiberglass rock did look like a face now, with crags and shadows forming the eyes and nose. The gaping mouth was the tunnel itself. Inside, it was dank and dark, with a musty smell. And quiet. That afternoon there had been the sounds of people talking, the occasional echoing laugh. Now all Jenny could hear was the quiet lapping of water around the boat. She was still holding the flashlight Dee had given her. and she trained it on the water, the walls, the swanââ¬â¢s head. All unexciting. The water was dark green and murky, the walls were damp and trickly, the swanââ¬â¢s head was staying put. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s the stuff-the scenes and everything?â⬠Michael whispered. It was a whispering kind of place. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know,â⬠Jenny said, just as softly. That afternoon there had been illuminated dioramas-silly things like Stone Age people playing cards and painting dinosaurs on the cave walls. Now there was nothing. The swan boat went on gliding smoothly into darkness. That was when Jenny noticed something wrong with the flashlight. The light was getting dimmer. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠she said and turned it toward her. Orange. The white beam was receding into a sullen orange glow. She banged it on the swanââ¬â¢s neck and immediately wished she hadnââ¬â¢t. It made a startlingly loud sound, and the light got even dimmer. ââ¬Å"Oh, criminy-mine, too,â⬠Michael said. She could hear the jingle of metal as he shook it. ââ¬Å"We should have kept just one on, to save the batteries,â⬠Dee muttered. ââ¬Å"I thought of that before, and then I forgot. Iââ¬â¢m stupid.â⬠Even in the midst of her worry Jenny was shocked at this. Dee didnââ¬â¢t talk that way. ââ¬Å"Look, Dee, if anybody should have thought of it-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"There it goes,â⬠Michael said. There was now complete darkness from the backseat. Jenny had been thumbing the switch of her flashlight and screwing and unscrewing the top. but it didnââ¬â¢t make any difference. She could barely see the dim orange bulb. When she shook it, it went out altogether. ââ¬Å"Spiffy, spiffy, spiffy,â⬠Michael said. Audrey said sharply, ââ¬Å"Does anybody feel like weââ¬â¢re slowing down?â⬠It was hard to tell in the dark. Jenny was thoroughly sick of darkness-it seemed as if sheââ¬â¢d spent all night blind, wondering what might be coming at her from which direction. But she thought Audrey could be right. The lapping water was quieter. The only motion she could feel was the gentle swaying of the boat from side to side. There was a quiet splash. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re not moving,â⬠Dee said. ââ¬Å"Dee, get your hand out of the water!â⬠Dee muttered something inaudible, but Jenny heard the drip as she took her hand out. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like this,â⬠Summer said. Jenny didnââ¬â¢t, either-and she especially didnââ¬â¢t like the thought of getting out of the boat and sloshing around trying to find their way. ââ¬Å"So weââ¬â¢re stranded,â⬠she murmured. Everyone else was very still and tense. Wondering whatââ¬â¢s coming at us, and from which directionâ⬠¦ . She could think of lots of things, all of them nasty. And she had time to think, because for a long while they just sat there, the swan boat rocking gently in the darkness. ââ¬Å"Just donââ¬â¢t imagine anything,â⬠Audrey said through her teeth from the backseat. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m trying not to,â⬠Michael answered defensively. But of course it was impossible, like trying not to think of a pink elephant. The harder Jenny tried not to imagine what Julian might do to them, the quicker the images crowded into her mind. Every nightmare sheââ¬â¢d ever had was suddenly clamoring for her attention. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t take this anymore,â⬠Summer breathed. Dee exhaled sharply. ââ¬Å"No. Look, Iââ¬â¢m gonna-ââ¬Å" Light. It started as a fuzzy blue patch in Jennyââ¬â¢s peripheral vision, and brightened when she turned to look at it. Like a spotlight in some overly dramatic stage show. Two other spotlights went on, one red, one purple. The colors of the floodlights outside-and the colors of the stained-glass lamps in the More Games shop, Jenny thought. The place where sheââ¬â¢d first seen Julian. ââ¬Å"It all comes down to this, doesnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠Julianââ¬â¢s voice said. He moved out of the darkness, into the circle where the spotlights mingled. He was wearing a T-shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a black vest, and neat black boots. There was some kind of bangle around his upper arm. He looked urban and barbaric, like somebody you might find wandering the bad parts of town at night. Some street kid with no place to go and too much knowledge behind his blue eyes. Summer took one look at him and crouched behind Dee. Jenny felt at a disadvantage. Julian was in the place where the diorama should be-but she felt as if the five of them in the flimsy plastic boat were the show. Julian was in a perfect position to watch whatever happened to them-and they couldnââ¬â¢t even stand without risking an upset. ââ¬Å"You were wrong about the sign on this ride,â⬠Julian said casually. He stood easily, seeming to enjoy their reactions as they stared at him. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not the Tunnel of Love and Death. Itââ¬â¢s the Tunnel of Love-and Despair.â⬠The five in the boat just looked at him. Finally Dee said, ââ¬Å"So what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Just thought youââ¬â¢d like to know.â⬠He flipped something in the air, caught it. Jenny couldnââ¬â¢t tell what color the thing was because of the lights, but it gleamed. ââ¬Å"What, this? Oh, yes, itââ¬â¢s a doubloon,â⬠Julian said, looking into his palm as if only just then noticing it. Everyone in the boat exchanged glances. The boat rocked gently. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you want to know what you have to do to get it?â⬠Jenny didnââ¬â¢t, but she felt sure he was going to tell them anyway. ââ¬Å"You just have to listen, thatââ¬â¢s all. Weââ¬â¢ll have a little conversation. A chat.â⬠It was up to Jenny to answer, and she knew it. ââ¬Å"About what?â⬠she said tensely, leaning back to look at him around Dee. ââ¬Å"This and that. The weather. Nuclear disarmament. You.â⬠ââ¬Å"Us?â⬠Michael squeaked, startled into speech. ââ¬Å"Sure. Look at you-all of you. What a pathetic bunch. And youââ¬â¢re trying to storm the Shadow World?â⬠ââ¬Å"Right,â⬠Dee muttered and started to get up. ââ¬Å"You never learn, do you?â⬠Julian said and took a step toward her. That was all he did, but Dee sat down, only partly because Jenny had grabbed her arm and pulled her back. Julian was scaring Jenny right now-not with any overt display of power, but just with himself. What he was. Julian picked up moods and put them on like clothes, and right now the brightness in his eyes, the quick rise of his breathing, the way his lips were slightly skinned back from his teeth-they all scared Jenny. He was in the mood to destroy things, to bring down some ultimate disaster, she thought. Not just to hunt, but to kill. ââ¬Å"Please, letââ¬â¢s all just be calm,â⬠she said. Julian was still looking at Dee, with bright sickness shining in his eyes. ââ¬Å"Maybe youââ¬â¢re just too stupid to learn,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the real reason you donââ¬â¢t want to go to college, isnââ¬â¢t it? You know youââ¬â¢ll never be as smart as your mother.â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t rise to him,â⬠Jenny said. ââ¬Å"Dee, turn around-just donââ¬â¢t listen.â⬠Dee didnââ¬â¢t turn. Jenny could only see her silhouette, and the blue light glistening on the velvet nubs of hair on her head, but she could feel the stress in Deeââ¬â¢s body. ââ¬Å"All this athletic stuff is just a front because you know youââ¬â¢ve disappointed her,â⬠Julian said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re inferior where it counts most.â⬠ââ¬Å"Dee, you know thatââ¬â¢s not trueâ⬠¦ .â⬠ââ¬Å"She knows she doesnââ¬â¢t know anything. Sheââ¬â¢s been wrong about so many things recently-like about Audrey and the lion. Like about Audreyââ¬â¢s mother. Imagine Mrs. Myers having done something Dee always meant to do.â⬠ââ¬Å"You leave her alone!â⬠Jenny said. ââ¬Å"And sheââ¬â¢s nothing without her confidence. Havenââ¬â¢t you noticed?â⬠ââ¬Å"Shut up!â⬠Dee shouted. It was a bad place for shouting, there were distant echoes. What frightened Jenny was the note of desperation in Deeââ¬â¢s voice. Dee never cried, but just now Deeââ¬â¢s voice sounded on the verge of tears. ââ¬Å"Despair,â⬠Jenny whispered suddenly. She reached around Dee to grip her arm. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you see what heââ¬â¢s trying to do? The Tunnel of Love and Despair-and he wants you to despair. To give up, to stop fighting.â⬠ââ¬Å"She should give up,â⬠Julian agreed. He was breathless now, the queer wild look in his eyes brighter than ever. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s all talk. Hot air. Strutting around, building her muscles, saying ââ¬ËEverybody look at me.ââ¬â¢ But thereââ¬â¢s nothing underneath.â⬠Jenny thought of something. She leaned in toward Dee, her fingers biting into Deeââ¬â¢s arm, and said, ââ¬Å"I am my only master.â⬠Deeââ¬â¢s head turned slightly, like a startled bird. ââ¬Å"I am my only master,â⬠Jenny whispered urgently, prompting her. ââ¬Å"Go on, Dee. You said it, and itââ¬â¢s true. He canââ¬â¢t do anything to you. He doesnââ¬â¢t count. You are your only master.â⬠She felt Deeââ¬â¢s breath go out. ââ¬Å"Gets her philosophy from kung fu movies,â⬠Julian said. ââ¬Å"Thinks fortune cookies are great literature.â⬠ââ¬Å"I am my only master!â⬠Dee said. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s right.â⬠Jennyââ¬â¢s throat hurt. She kept holding on to Deeââ¬â¢s arm. Deeââ¬â¢s neck twisted like a black swanââ¬â¢s, to look at Jenny just for a moment. Jenny got a glimpse of tear tracks on the dark skin, shining blue and purple in the light, then Dee turned back. ââ¬Å"I am my only master,â⬠she said clearly, to Julian. There was a stirring in the backseat. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s smart, too,â⬠Audrey said, astonishing Jenny. ââ¬Å"And brave. Sheââ¬â¢s done all sorts of brave things since I got hurt. She didnââ¬â¢t mean to hurt me, and I never thought she did.â⬠Dee turned and gave Audrey one sloe-eyed look of gratitude, and her shoulders straightened. She sat as proud and tall as Nefertiti. ââ¬Å"Besides, college and books arenââ¬â¢t everything,â⬠Michael said, amazing Jenny further. ââ¬Å"I thought they were-to you,â⬠Julian said. He was looking at Michael now, and his voice was beautiful, like ebony and silver. Michael seemed to get smaller. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the one who reads about things because youââ¬â¢re afraid to actually do them. You talk about your books-or make jokes. The class clown. But people are laughing at you, not with you, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, theyââ¬â¢re not,â⬠Michael said, which was another surprise for Jenny. She wouldnââ¬â¢t have thought Michael would speak up for himself. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a nothing. Just a funny little fat boy that people laugh at. Youââ¬â¢re a joke.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, Iââ¬â¢m not,â⬠Michael said doggedly. Jenny felt a surge of admiration. Michael was holding out-maybe because heââ¬â¢d gotten teased and stomped on at school. Heââ¬â¢d heard it all before. But Julianââ¬â¢s face was more confident than ever-and more cruel. He flashed a smile that sent chills up Jennyââ¬â¢s arms. ââ¬Å"We wonââ¬â¢t talk about the little rituals you had when you were a kid,â⬠he told Michael. ââ¬Å"Like how you had to tear the toilet paper up into tiny pieces, exactly even. Or if you saw the word death, you had to count to eighteen. To chai-ââ¬Ëlifeââ¬â¢ in Hebrew.â⬠Michaelââ¬â¢s chest was heaving. Jenny opened her mouth, outraged, but Julian went urbanely on. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll just cut to the chase. Ask your girlfriend if sheââ¬â¢s ever called you ââ¬ËTubbyââ¬â¢ behind your back.â⬠Michael turned on Audrey. Jenny could see that his defenses had torn; his face had that rumpled, not-ready-for-company look that meant he was about to cry. ââ¬Å"Did you say that?â⬠Audrey looked pale in the blue and purple lights, her lipstick garish. She seemed ready to cry, too. ââ¬Å"Did you say that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course she did,â⬠Julian said. ââ¬Å"She said lots of other things, too. About how her dream boy was six feet tall and blond and a surfer. About how she only took up with you to fill in the time until she found someone better.â⬠Michael was looking at Audrey. ââ¬Å"Did you say that?â⬠he repeated, his voice an anguished plea. Jenny willed Audrey to say no. Audrey looked back at Michael for a long, horrible moment, then said, ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Michael turned away. ââ¬Å"Because you were good for a laugh,â⬠Julian put in helpfully. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you want to laugh now?â⬠ââ¬Å"Shut up, you bastard!â⬠Jenny shouted furiously. She was sick with her own impotence-sheââ¬â¢d helped Dee, but there was nothing she could do to help Michael. Not with this. ââ¬Å"I told you in the very beginning about the Game,â⬠Julian said. ââ¬Å"Desires unveiled. Secrets revealed. Donââ¬â¢t you remember?â⬠Audrey wasnââ¬â¢t listening, she was looking only at Michael, her whole being focused on him. ââ¬Å"I did say that,â⬠she said fiercely. ââ¬Å"A long time ago. I didnââ¬â¢t even really mean it then, I was just showing off.â⬠ââ¬Å"You still said it,â⬠Michael said dully, not turning. ââ¬Å"I said it before, Michael. Before you showed me that what people look like isnââ¬â¢t important. Before I found out I loved you.â⬠She dissolved in sobs. Michael turned halfway. His dark eyes were wide open. ââ¬Å"Oh-look,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t. Itââ¬â¢s okay.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not okay,â⬠Audrey stormed. ââ¬Å"Michael Allen Cohen-youââ¬â¢re an idiot!â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s what he said-â⬠Michael muttered. Audrey shook him, turning him the rest of the way around. ââ¬Å"I love you,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"You made me fall in love with you. I donââ¬â¢t care how tall you are or what color your hair is-I care about you. You make me laugh. Youââ¬â¢re smart. Youââ¬â¢re gentle. And youââ¬â¢re real, youââ¬â¢re a real person, not some jock with a facade thatââ¬â¢s going to fall apart when I get to know him. I know you already, and I love you, you idiot. I donââ¬â¢t care what you do with toilet paper.â⬠ââ¬Å"When I was seven,â⬠Michael said. Audrey was still crying, and he reached out a stubby thumb to wipe the tears off her cheeks. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a good kisser, too,â⬠Audrey said, sniffling. She put her arms around him and laid her head on his shoulder. ââ¬Å"Hey, Iââ¬â¢m a great kisser,â⬠Michael whispered. ââ¬Å"As I will demonstrate when we get out of this freakinââ¬â¢ freak show.â⬠He cradled her protectively. Jenny felt a flush of pride and joy-in their strength, in the tenderness in Michaelââ¬â¢s face and the way Audrey clung to him. She looked at Julian defiantly. Julian wasnââ¬â¢t happy. He obviously didnââ¬â¢t like the way things were going. Then he smiled, sharp as a sword. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s right, cry, you whining baby,â⬠he said, his eyes fixed on Audreyââ¬â¢s auburn head. ââ¬Å"But make sure you donââ¬â¢t smear your mascara. Youââ¬â¢re nothing but a painted mannequin.â⬠His voice was venomous. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re not listening!â⬠Michael said. He began talking to Audrey, softly and rapidly, right in her ear. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re going to turn out like your mother, you know-a shrill and contentious bitch. Your fatherââ¬â¢s words, I believe. Youââ¬â¢re afraid that youââ¬â¢re not capable of having real feelings like other people.â⬠Audrey didnââ¬â¢t even lift her head. Michael went on talking to her. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d say sheââ¬â¢s doing a pretty good imitation of having feelings,â⬠Dee said dryly. ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t you just back off, creep?â⬠Instead, Julian whirled on her-no, not on her. He was looking behind her, at Summer. ââ¬Å"And as for the brainless bit of fluff in front-ââ¬Å" Summer collapsed onto the floor of the boat. ââ¬Å"I know Iââ¬â¢m stUDid.â⬠she whisnereri Jennyââ¬â¢s fury lifted her to her feet, making the swan boat rock. ââ¬Å"Oh, no, you donââ¬â¢t,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"If you have something to say, say it to me.â⬠And then she was doing what sheââ¬â¢d least wanted to do all this time. She was getting out of the boat, splashing down into the water. It was cool, but it only came up to her knees. She splashed through it without letting herself think what might be swimming in it. Waves churned up, wetting her thighs. She reached the diorama in a few steps and scrambled up on it. Then she was facing Julian. ââ¬Å"Say it to me,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"If you have the guts.â⬠How to cite The Forbidden Game: The Kill Chapter 11, Essay examples

This is mainly due to the fact that the hotels and resorts in the coastline of Queensland are not able to sustain the environmental impact of the local region (Day Dobbs, 2013). Most of the hotels and resorts in the region are also not currently following the protocols of environmental safety that is highly necessary to sustain conservation and tourism industry in the respective destination. In order to improve upon the marketing plan of the hospitality industry in the respective region, it is important for all the management in all the hotels and resorts of the region to promote the importance of environmental conservation, which is highly essential in the context of current threatening ecological condition of Great Barrier Reef national park. It is important for the hospitality industry t o promote the business of ecotourism in Great Barrier Reef National Park, which is believed to be one of the effective marketing techniques that can be implemented by the stakeholders of the tourism department. With the help of marketing plan of ecotourism it is also possible to raise the awareness about importance of conservation among all Australian tourists in the local region. This will also help to promote the culture among Australians, thereby ensuring that the place is one of the top important priorities for all the tourists in Australia. Introduction of new Product Introduction of new product in the tourism department by the hospitality industry is one of the effective techniques that help to improve upon the business of the local region. Currently all the hotels and resorts that are located along the coastline of great barrier reef offer a wide range of food products. It is however also important to introduce new food product line, which are mostly important for tourists in sea beaches. New beverage service introduction can help to expand the food product lines that are currently being offered in the hotels and resorts. Improved form of beverage service can be the source of major way to better the hospitality care taken towards the guests. Natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables can be introduced as a part of beverage service that is provided by the hotels and resorts (Ellis et al., 2017). Recommendations for Sustainability and substantiate of the new product From the survey analysis that has been done upon the business performance tourism department it has been seen that there is growing demand among the customers about introduction of beverage service for the tourists (Hofman Hughes, 2017). The current products that are available with the hospitality industry do not focus on providing better level of customer service through refreshing beverage drinks. Hence, with the introduction of the beverage service it is possible to improve the quality of the overall hospitality service of the industry. The natural drinks that are offered to the guests are an important part of the service that is associated with that of the food service industry. The beverages also need to have the option of having different types of flavour, which is necessary to give a refreshing feeling to the guests. Before implementation of the marketing plan, it is important to consider about the validation of the marketing plan. This is highly relevant in the context that it will allow the stakeholders of the hospitality industry to ensure that the ethical protocols are being followed within the marketing plan that do not cause any harm to the natural resource of the Great Barrier Reef.
