Essay Why All Drugs Should Be Legalized - 1468 Words

Abraham Lincoln once said: â€Å"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a mans appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.†(Lincoln) When most people think of prohibition, they think of the 18th amendment of the constitution; the alcohol ban in the 1920’s. Most people nowadays think of the law as ridiculous, implausible, impossible to enforce, an attack of freedom, and a complete failure. These are all true and most people think that prohibition is a thing of the past,†¦show more content†¦Why did Nixon claim drug use as public enemy number one? With the civil rights movement at its height American values were changing drastically. Not only was their racial equality groups there were groups like hippies that had different believes then traditional American values. During this change the public started to see drug use as a product of rebellious youth or crazy hippies, during this time President Richard Nixon created the Drug Enforcement Agency. As a way to help stop the heroin addition of many solders in the military, ease the public’s negative view towards drug use and was used as an excuse to arrest protesters of the Vietnam War. There were similar drug enforcement agencies before the War on drugs like the FBN and BNDD which enforced the early drug laws. However when they were replaced with the DEA the power law enforcement had with drug crimes increased substantially. The harms caused by The War on Drugs There are many reasons that the War on drugs is harmful to our country. The first reason is that the War on Drug’s employs criminals. Due to the fact that many drugs are illegal, drug users can only buy there drugs form drug dealers. Most dealers get their supplies from South American drug lords, who kill hundreds of people each year.
